In an interview some time ago, when asked what type of car he owns, Gerard Butler revealed..

"I have an old 1972 V-12 engine E-type Jag" in addition to a Jag XT and an Audi TT.

Series III E-Type Jaguars, which sport the V-12 engine, were manufactured from 1971 until 1974 during which only 7,990 roadsters and 7,297 coupes were built. Top speed was near 150 mph and 0 to 60 acceleration was just under 7 seconds. When the V12 Series III E-Type was introduced, the roadster version cost double the annual salary of a factory worker in England.  However, despite the high cost, Jaguar's sleek performance sports car actually offered excellent value for the money costing approximately half the price of equivalent models from Ferrari and Aston Martin.

In 1972 the E-Type 5.3, also known as the Series III, came in both a roadster and 2+2 coupe model. The car was easily identifiable by it's chrome grille and distinguishable V12 badge. An automatic gearbox was an option,  steel wheels were standard and the traditional wooden steering wheel had been replaced with a leather one. Unfortunately, the E-Type Series III was short-lived. Assembly of both models had begun in March, 1971. However, by September, 1973, production of the 2+2 coupe had ceased. The roadster continued to be built for another 17 months until it was finally discontinued in February, 1975.

The last 49 roadsters built were painted black with the 50th car being finished in British Racing Green. Each of these 50 cars carried a brass plate on the dashboard that identified it as one of the last of the  E-Types to be built. The plate bore the signature of Sir William Lyons, the founder of the company who retired in 1972. By the time these 50 vehicles were commercially available, the 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series III  V-12 had lost favor in the marketplace and therefore, was difficult to sell. Dealers priced these few remaining cars very low in order to deplete their inventory. In today's classic car market they are now highly desirable collectors items that command a high premium with some sales of just under $50,000.00 being recorded. Quite a considerable difference from it's original $7,325 price tag. In recognition of  the importance of this legendary car, the very last E-Type to be built was retained by the company.

Gerard Butler does not own any of these cars. They are only shown here as examples.

At the time of the interview, his assistant reported that Gerard's V12 is black.
